The reason behind ongoing protests in Turkey

The ongoing protests and demonstrations began in Turkey in last March, due to the suspension of the Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem imamoğlu. 

The protests take place in the major cities and notably in Istanbul and Izmir. The ruling party in Turkey AK Party (justice and development) has detained more than 100 people since 19th March. 


Background 


Early Life 

Ekrem İmamoğlu, born on June 4, 1970, in Trabzon, Turkey, he is a prominent Turkish politician and a key figure in the country’s contemporary political landscape. Representing the Republican People’s Party (CHP), İmamoğlu has emerged as a symbol of change, democratic resilience, and modern governance in Turkey, particularly through his office as the Mayor of Istanbul.


Beginnings 

İmamoğlu's political career began in 2008 when he joined the CHP. He was elected as the Mayor of Beylikdüzü, a district on the European side of Istanbul, in 2014. His work in Beylikdüzü, known for transparency and urban improvement, gained  him a positive attention and set the stage for his next major political goal.

In 2019, İmamoğlu was elected as the CHP’s candidate for the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality in what would become one of the most significant and democratic elections in modern Turkish history.

The 2019 Istanbul Mayoral Election

The 2019 Istanbul mayoral race was a turning point for Turkish politics. İmamoğlu narrowly won the initial election in March, defeating the AK Party candidate and former Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım. However, the Supreme Electoral Council controversially ignored the results, citing irregularities. This decision sparked widespread criticism both in Turkey and internationally, seen as a blow to the democratic process.

İmamoğlu  ran another campaign in the June 2019 re-election. This time, he won by a much larger margin — over 800,000 votes — a decisive victory 


His Vision

Since taking office, İmamoğlu has focused on modernizing Istanbul’s infrastructure, promoting social justice, and increasing transparency in city governance. He has emphasized public transportation development, green urban initiatives, and digital transformation. Under his leadership, Istanbul has launched several projects aimed at combating poverty and improving municipal services.

İmamoğlu is also known for his calm demeanor and unifying rhetoric in a political environment often marked by polarization. He consistently calls for a return to democratic norms, rule of law, and civil dialogue.
